Design Inspiration: Colour

("Pretty in Pink" by Handmaden Designs)

Another source for design inspiration is colour. There are many ways colour can inspire design. Here are a few:

-colour trends
-fabric swatches
-creation/nature
-colour theory
-emotion

-Colour Trends:

Colour trends can be useful for inspiring design because they tell you what is presently popular and is selling  and so allows you to play around with colour schemes you know people will like.  Now these change all the time so you need to always be paying attention to what colours you see coming into stores whenever they change their products for the season and see if you can spot what seem to be the "in" colors for the season.

-Fabric Swatches:

Sometimes stores that carry fabric bolts (particularly upholstry fabric) will have swatches you can take as a fabric sample.  Take any swatch that has a colour, or texture that you like.  These can be a great addition to an inspiration morgue (more information about inspiration morgues to com in another post) and provide ideas bout how to combine colours.

-Creation/Nature:
Look around you at the various colours in the natural world.  You could make a piece inspired by the colours of a sunset or sunrise, or of some bug, bird, or other creature.

-Colour Theory:

This is a pretty big source of inspiration when it comes to colour.  There are soooo many different ways you can use it.  You can use complementary colours, split complementary colours;  play with shades, hues, tones.... You can even use colour theory to help create illusions.

-Emotion:

Colour can create an emotional response, and certain colours are often associated with particular emotions, so consider playing around with this.
