Gemstone of the Week; Amethyst

("Muriel" by Handmaden Designs)

Amethyst is a gorgeous form of Quartz.  It is generally purple or violet (sometimes there are varieties that are so pale in color they almost appear pink).  Amethyst can come in a wide range of purples. Some are a light lavender, while others may been so dark they are almost black in colour, while others still may be a deep purple with red flashes when viewed under the right lighting.  It is this evenly coloured, deep purple Amethyst with the red flashes that is the most valuable color.  Amethyst is valued anywhere between $2-$90 per carat, and is the February birthstone and 6th wedding anniversary stone.
