Business Registration Step One Complete!

Well, I've officially sent off the paperwork and payment to establish an LLC (Limited Liability Company) as an Independent Studio Jeweler! Now, I just need to phone the Michigan State Treasury and IRS about the sales and income tax forms I need to register for. I'm not sure whether I'm excited, petrified, or a mix of both!

SCA Event Canceled

Unfortunately, I've had to cancel going to the SCA event tomorrow.  Just too many things going on with a new puppy, too many things going on at one time and not enough time to get ready, and two out of the three people who would be going having back issues at the moment.

This appears to be an event that they have every year so hopefully I'll be able to go next year.

Call of the Waterhorse SCA Event

This Saturday (August 27) I will be a merchant at the Midrealm SCA (Society of Creative Anachronism) event Call of the Waterhorse  in Oscoda, Michigan.  I will be there from early in the morning (hoping to be set up by about 10am) until around 5pm.  For information about the event you can visit their website.

Gemstone of the Week: Garnet

("Sterling Silver Boxchain bracelet" by Handmaden Designs"

Garnet is a beautiful group of gemstones.  Most people think of garnets as being red, but there are many different types of garnets.  The specific types of garnet species are:

Andradite: includes the varieties of: Demantoid (a green garnet); Topazolite (yellow/orange); and Melanite (black).
Spessartine: includes the varieties of: Kashmirine (orange); Little Three Mine (also orange); and Mandarin garnet (again, orange).
Almandine (if pure): a purple garnet.
Pyope-almandine: varieties include: Rhodolite (purple-red/pink).
Pyrope (if pure): a red garnet.
Grossular-andradite: includes the varieties of: Mali garnet (green or yellow in colour).
Pyrope-spessartine: includes the varieties of: Colour change (variable in colour)  and Malaia garnet (orange/pink-orange).
Grossular: includes the varieties of: Hessonite (orange or yellow); Tsavorite (green); Translucent green garnets; Translucent white garnets; and Translucent pink garnets.

Garnet is the birthstone for January and also anniversary stone for the 2nd anniversary. Traditionally, garnets represent friendship. Some of the most beautiful red garnets are the Bohemian pyrope garnets from what used to be Czechoslovakia.

Gemstone of the Week: Mother of Pearl

("Ioanna" by Handmaden Designs)

Alright, so technically, Mother of  Pearl isn't a gemstone, but it is used a lot in jewelry and as a decorative inlay for a lot things.  Mother of Pearl is that iridescent layer found inside of clams, oysters, and other mollusk shells. It is made of the exact same material as pearls are.

Back from Weekend Art Show and Really, Really Excited!

I just got back yesterday from a two day weekend Fine Art Show in Tawas, MI and am so excited about how it went!  Praise the Lord for answered prayers!!  It was by far the best show I've ever done.

The Lord answered our prayers about keeping everything safe, as nothing was stolen (although unfortunately two other vendors did have this problem), the EZ-up stayed up despite some strong wind gusts the second day, and we had safe driving to-and-from the show.

There were strong storms predicted for Sunday, but the Lord answered prayers about having great weather for the show as the storms didn't come until after we had packed everything up and had all gotten into the truck.  Then, it just let loose with what can only be described as monsoon-like rains.  This made getting back home the second day quite interesting as the the police had closed the road we needed to be on and were turning everyone away due to a a power line that had come down in the middle of the road.

And what made things even more exciting is that I took 1st Honorable Mention in the jewelry category!
