Gemstone of the Week: Morganite

Morganite is a variety of Beryl.  It tends to be pink, rose-lilac, peach, orange, or pinkish-yellow.  The colour is due to the presence of either cesium or manganese in the crystals.  Often, Morganite will be colour banded, with blue near the base, almost colourless in the center, to peach or pink a t the termination.  Morganite was named after J.Pierpont Morgan who discovered it in 1917.  Morganiteis found in the U.S., Madagascar, Mozanbique,  Italy, and Brazil.  It has a per carat value of between $40-$500 depending on the size, colour, and quality of the stone.
