Gemstone of the Week: Bloodstone
Bloodstone is an interesting variety of Chalcedony. It is a dark green stone with red spots and was named bloodstone because the red spots resembled drops of blood. Bloodstone is also known as Heliotrope which comes from to Greek words: "helio" meaning sun, and "trepein" meaning turning. Bloodstone is most often an opaque stone, but sometimes it can be somewhat translucent. It can be found in India, Brazil, and Australia. Bloodstone can often be purchased at prices anywhere from $5-$50 per stone.
